Microsoft Windows and Linux
My thoughts on Windows and Linux
I am fairly new to Linux, but in my experience I will say that it is a 90% alternative to Windows.
Linux has everything you need if your just doing basic computing.
For an office suite there is Open Office. I've used it numerous times and can say that it is even better than Microsoft Office.
I have never had an open office application crash on me, while Microsoft office has crashed on my many times.
Internet browser, the web standard is Firefox, which Linux comes with pre-installed on startup. Firefox is probably the best browser out right now, it is very secure, very stable, and is very fast. Internet explorer is bloated, slow, veryun-secure.
I haven't used it too much but instead of photoshop it has The Gimp. To me I would still use Adobe's products only because I haven't used Gimp too much.
Linux, by the way, is an all open source project, meaning that someone anyone, who knows how, could use Linux and make there own, make it better, etc... While as Microsoft, it is a commercial, closed-source project. It is strictly in the hands of Windows. Linux pretty much has any alternative to anything Windows has, and even a Mac.
Now Windows on the other hand is also a good operating system. I will not say that it sucks because it doesn't suck. We all grew up on windows, we know how it works, and it is the standard.
But because windows has over 90% of the market, it has made it a target for adware, viruses, trojans, spyware, etc... Windows is the least secure operating system out there. Linux and Macs do not have this problem.
The big thing Windows has that Linux does not have is gaming compatibility. Basically all PC games are made for windows, but even then Linux has Wine, (Wine is a Windows emulator that allows your Linux OS to use Windows programs and install .exe files). But games on Linux doesn't go as smoothly as it does on Windows.
Things to consider if you switch to Linux:
* It isn't Windows, expect to learn new things, while Linux nowadays isn't hard to figure out, don't expect it to run like Windows.
* Linux has an open source alternative to anything Windows has.
* Find your community. I use Ubuntu, and on their website they have a forum board where you can post any topic you want, and most likely someone Will help you on your problem.
It is a great way of learning how to use Linux if your new.
* Anything Windows does, Linux could do it better (most of the time)
But here are some gripes on Linux. Some things don't work as smoothly as Windows, such as Quick time, it tends to be buggy sometimes, but it does work. The media players are notiTunes or Windows Media Player. If you want to use an iPod with Linux, expect to ask someone because it is pretty hard setting it up at first. A good media player for Linux in my opinion is Songbird. It is an application made from Mozilla, who also doFirefox.
But there it is, Windows is the industry standard, Linux is rising.
If you don't want to only use Linux or Windows, you can install Linux using a DUAL-BOOT method. My next video will show you how to installUbuntu in a dual boot.

College
College
Why is college so important?
It is the best way to learn what you need to know about what you are interested in (Besides first hand experience).
It gets you prepared for what to expect in the subject your learning.
In high school, that doesn't happen, sure you can take some elective classes, but it will be no where near the kind of experience you would get if you went to college to learn it.
The purpose of college is higher education, that is why they are given these names that establishes themselves from other types of schools...Institute, University, Ivy League...
I just finished going to my Orientation for college at The Art Institute. The instructors that gave speeches preached about how college in general is the ultimate step in pursuing that dream job you want.
"I've always wanted to make movies."
"I've always wanted make video games."
"I've always wanted to do advertising."
"I've always wanted to act."
"I've always wanted to design web pages."
etc...etc...
With college, these statements are given a push into existence. Sure someone could have no college experience what so all and end up doing what your doing, but that is what makes you a step ahead of them, you learn that step he had to learn on his own, now all you have to do is work on improving that skill and thinking up new ways of doing it.
With high school, they give you enough knowledge to hold your own in life. And even then it may not cut it. College is that step that puts you from poverty to middle class, and even into the rich. But nothing comes without hard work, and unless you are totally anal about school, with a 4.0 gpa in high school, most students didn't care about school because they were'nt interested. When it comes to work that you can have fun with, something you can work on for 5 hours at once, and think you only worked for 1 hour, and you realize this, that is when you know you made the right decision.
I entered AI (Art Institute) because i wanted to learn something I was interested in. My major is Web Design/Interactive Media. And I know that college will be the best experience I will have for a long time.

Buy a PC or build one yourself
Custom PC or buy one?
The whole reason for building your own PC is to put what you want in it.
How may GB's of RAM do you want?
How many GB's of Internal memory do you want
Do you play PC games, if so what graphics card do I need?
Stuff like that, and there are many other reasons, but those are just a few reasons to think of if you want to build your own computer.
With buying a pre-built computer you have to deal with branding, because that is really all you are paying for (HP, Sony, Toshiba, Gateway, Dell, etc...). The second factor your buying into is the labor of the assembly of that computer. But here are a few reasons to buy a PC.
I don't know how to build a computer...
I don't have the time to build a computer...
I can probably find the kind of computer I need from a manufacturer such as HP or Sony...
But really I see no benefit to buying a computer compared to building one yourself. There are multiple videos on youtube showing you how to build a computer. And there are other sites that can teach you how. To be completely honest, I watched like 10 videos on youtube on how to build a computer and I built mine.
If I had bought my computer with the exact some specs, it would probably cost about $1500 dollars or more. I only paid about $1000 dollars for my PC in total.
It's even possible to find a computer store and you can buy the parts you want and have the PC store build it for you. You would basically pay for the assembly, but you get what you want.
Here are the specs of my computer:
- 4GB RAM
- 300 GB Internal Memory Hard Drive
- Intel Duo Core Processor 2.8Ghz
- nVidia geForce 8400 graphics card
- DVD/CD reader/burner combo
- 9 in 1 Media Card reader (Micro SD's and that sort)
- MSI p35 Intel chip set motherboard
- Thermaltake computer tower
- Windows Vista Home Premium
Cost - $1000

September 23rd!!!
Why September 23 is going to be an awesome day.
On September 23, there are so many things happening it is unbelievable. Here is a quick rundown of what is happening that day.
For you gamers we have another Halo 3 update, it is the second title update, which will include more achievements for you power gamers, new Bunie.net features, and will also revamp the player rating system. It will also release new game playlists, as well as retire some old ones such as Rocket Race and Big Team Battle. However, the new achievements will not be put into place until the 25th of September.
For you designers, Adobe is unveiling its new CS4 line, which is an update to the previous CS3 lineup. A 64 bit version will also be released, but only for PC not for MAC OS X. So far only a few applications have been confirmed for the CS4 package, and they are:
Adobe Dreamweaver
Adobe Fireworks
Adobe Flash
Adobe Flashplayer
Adobe Photoshop
Adobe Soundbooth
And most-likely updates to their other applications such as InDesign and Illustrator.
For you movie buffs, Michael Moore is releasing his new movie “Slacker Uprising” for free. Here is a link to the site where you have to register: http://slackeruprising.com/
He plays a little joke on the site where you have to agree that you are a US citizen or a Canadian citizen buy just clicking on a button that says “I am a resident of the U.S. or Canada .“ This movie is another documentary, and it will be based on Michael Moore in an attempt to rally young voters to vote before the 2004 election. Be wary though, “Slacker Uprising” will only be out for free download between September 23rd and October 13th.
For you Gadget guys, the first release of an Android powered phone will be released for T-Mobile on September 23rd. The phone is from HTC dubbed the HTC Dream. It features a full slide out 5 row Qwerty keyboard, a large touchscreen, 3.1 megapixel camera, 3G networking, speakerphone, and many other features which I don't care to discuss. It's basically another smart phone. It is also rumored that it will feature the new Google browser, Google Chrome.
For you Lego people out there, a new Lego game is being released, Lego Batman. It will feature basically all of the Batman characters including Robin, the Joker, Bane, Harley Quinn, Catwoman, the Penguin, and so many more. What is going to be considered one of the best Lego games ever, but hey, since when did lego games dissapoint. Lego Star Wars, Lego Indiana Jones, and Now Lego Batman, all awesome.
So here is to a happy September 23rd everyone, keep reading, subscribe to my blog to keep up with all my latest posts and videos.

How To Use Linux - Live CD (In the works)
First video is on its way and should be posted on Youtube by the end of the week.
The first episode will concentrate on how to download, burn, and use a Live CD from a linux distro.
I hope it will be a very useful video for anyone to use. The second episode will consist on how to install it onto your computer using a dual-boot, or a complete installation (removing windows in the process).
Keep in mind, do the research before you switch OS's. If your a gamer, stick with windows, if your a designer, stick with a Mac, if you are just a regular user, meaning you surf the web, do Word processing projects, etc...Linux is fine.
Not all programs and software works on Linux, but most likely you can find an open source version of it (Open Office instead of Microsoft Office, The GIMP instead of Adobe Photoshop, etc...)
Thankyou for reading, keep in touch.
